A 7.7 earthquake hits Indonesia’s northwest island of Sumatra early Wednesday. The earthquake occurred at about 5:15AM. (2215 GMT) It has an epicenter of 205km northwest of Sibogla, Sumatra, with a depth of 46km.
Although the earthquake was strong, it only had a few tremors underwater. Indonesia is also part of the “Ring of Fire” wherein movement of plates usually occurs. The horrifying tsunami last 2004 in Sumatra would not be repeated today, wherein more than 200,000 people died.
